History of Westcoast German News
1. Started as a newsletter called “German Voices Vancouver”
2. Changed to “Westcoast German News” after a year
3. Turned into a magazine in 2012
4. Turned into a blog in 2013
5. Now it is slowly evolving to become a gateway to Europe.
Elke Porter is a public relations consultant and technical specialist, who enjoys working with WordPress, Photoshop, InDesign and with a large variety of social media platforms. She has lived in 4 countries including Australia, Germany, the USA and Canada. She has travelled to Micronesia, Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef and to France, Germany and the UK, as well as areas around British Columbia.
Elke also loves riding horses, exploring caves and has years of scuba diving experience, including a session in the Adams River when the salmon were running. She has also spent a weekend in Port Alberni in the Rendezvous Dive Adventures lodge, exploring what Jacques Cousteau referred to as “The Emerald Sea”. She saw fish, invertebrates, marine mammals and kelp forests that featured nudibranches, anemones, scallops, purple ring top snails, orange peels etc.
Elke grew up in the German Canadian community and is on the Board of the German Canadian Business Association. She also has a blog called “Westcoast German News”. Elke has 8 years teaching experience, including 3 years in Sydney, Australia, teaching Preschool children the basics of German through songs, games and art activities. Elke has also done translations work and helps German tourists and new residents from Germany adapt to life here.
One of first jobs as a teenager was working with a motorhome company who catered to German tourists and it was her job to show them around the motorhome and give them tips on what to see in beautiful British Columbia.
