Andy’s German Bakehaus, an artisan bakery established in 1957, are hiring an experienced pastry chef familiar with heavy duty, high volume fast-paced pastry production and product development.

Please drop off resumé at our store at 935 Commercial Drive in Vancouver, BC, or send to andysbakery@gmail.com

Sven Becker, 44, who bought Andy’s German Bakehaus on Commercial Drive in September, 2015.

Becker started his new career modestly enough four years ago, baking German-style cheesecakes in Bon Bon Bakery’s kitchen during their downtimes. He had just finished a research job at the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario and turned 40 years old. He turned down a post-doctoral position at the University of B.C. and decided to make a break for something new.

German baking is traditionally less sweet than most North American cakes. Becker made good cakes, and he soon found a modest market selling to little cafes, private customers and other bakeries. When Bon Bon closed while moving locations, he started renting the kitchen at Andy’s. Two years later, the owners offered him the business.

GlobalMe Hiring German Native Speakers

Globalme Localization (www.globalme.net) is a language and technology company. We localize software, wearable devices, applications and websites. We will be doing a speech data collection and are looking for native French (from France), German (from Germany) and Spanish (from Spain) speakers who have spent most of their lives in those countries mentioned above.

We are looking for participants ages 18+.

Scope: Record various speech sentences for approximately 60 minutes. These sentences will be used to test the functionality of a new speech product.

Location: Downtown, Vancouver
Payment: $50 for participation
Timeline: February 8 – 25, 2018

Are you interested?

Yes, I am!
Qualifications:
1. You are legally entitled to work in Canada.
2. You are a native speaker of the language that you are registering for – French (from France), German (from Germany) or Spanish (from Spain). You are able to speak fluently without any foreign accent.
3. You are able to read and speak clearly – a candidate should not have any speech impediments or reading difficulty.
4. You are able to follow instructions – you will need to follow instructions provided by an audio engineer.
5. You are able to arrive on time for your session – our schedule will be tight, we will need participants to be punctual.

We are trying something new this year! In February we are supporting any 3rd party fundraiser for SOS BC that registers with us.  We will list on our website, social media, and encourage folks to attend … or hold an event of your own.  Doesn’t have to be big, complicated,  or fancy. You can easily transform an event that was happening “anyway” into a great fundraiser.  Just fun, legal, and not require life insurance …. We hope people will use their imagination, get together with friends, family, and neighbors, and enjoy doing something good for foster kids.

SOS Kinder VillageAnd did I happen to mention we have some delicious Purdy’s Chocolate baskets up for grabs for the best fundraisers?  Just a little motivation ….

The information and registration forms for the February fundraising fun are up on the website:

http://www.sosbc.org/news-events/i-heart-sos-bc!

As soon as you have sent in the registration form, we can link you up with our social media, logos and so forth.

Hope the members of the German Community will join in to have some fun spreading a little love for the kids!

The Vancouver Alpen Club is hosting the kick-off event this weekend, on February 3rd – it’s already on the SOSBC.org website.

If you have any trouble downloading anything, just let me know, and I can send to you in an email.

With warm regards

Rose

Along with “The Butterfly Lovers”

Inspired by the world-renowned concerto – The Butterfly Lovers

International Acclaimed local choreographer Joshua Beamish re-imagined the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet

For most people who are familiar with legendary Chinese love stories, the Butterfly Lovers is simply the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet, only much older in history. Great stories carry great inspirations, and The Butterfly Lovers Concerto – one of the most renowned Chinese concertos in the West – was created because of these stories. In Vancouver, Coastal City Ballet attempts to add another flavour to this beautiful tale with choreography from Vancouver’s own Joshua Beamish, bringing ballet into a new epoch.

Vancouver, a city with a profoundly Asian-inspired cultural atmosphere, has motivated powerful integrations of diversity and multiculturalism in its arts, providing a source of inspiration for many art creators. Co-organized by Ballet Productions Canada Society (BPCS) and Asian-Canadian Special Events Association (ACSEA), LunarFest premieres the new ballet work, The Butterfly Lovers as one of the highlights celebrating Lunar New Year.” ACSEA has always been committed to initiating the interaction between cultures and communities. Vancouver is the perfect city to take that leap,” according to Charlie Wu, Executive Director of ACSEA.” Our community needs more attempts to create a greater possibility of new cultures.” The lead dancers for the work are Thys Armstrong of Dutch descent and Yoko Kanomato of Japanese descent.

Coinciding with the Lunar New Year celebration, Vancouver will also feel the vibe of Valentine’s Day. Presenting on the same stage will be The Love Stories by German choreographer Irene Schneider. The audience can get a taste of the clear contrast in expressing love, between the more explicit methods of Western culture and the more subtle ways of showing affection in the East. The show begins at 7:30 pm on February 16 at The Vancouver Playhouse.

For more ticket information, please check https://lunarfest.org/  or here:  https://www.vtixonline.com/event.php?event_id=1111,

There will also be an exclusive  pre-performance reception honoring Josh Beamish, to help raise funds for the Ballet Productions Canada Society (BPCS). Ballet Productions Canada Society’s mission is to provide performance opportunities for the emerging young dance artist, and to bring quality dance to a wider audience. http://www.balletproductions.ca

Finally, I made two for those who have or work with children:

Schwedische Online-Zeitung Veritas Arcana will deutschen Markt erschließen

Berlin, 18.01.2018

What is the Multicultural Fair:

Objectives are to celebrate the diverse cultures at the Prince of Wales Secondary School, to bring together the school community with the community at large and to enhance global learning.  To help students connect with diverse languages, social studies, art and music.

Prince of Wales Gym.

2250 Eddington Drive
Vancouver, B.C.
Canada
V6L 2E7
Phone: 604-713-8974

Tickets cost $5 each and it is ok to buy more than one.

Tickets cover the performances, the display tables, the international foods and the chance to win a prize.  People don’t need to buy a ticket, if they plan not to eat anything.

There will be at least 10 performances around 5 minutes each.

We could also use someone wearing traditional outfits to stand by the German Booth.

Germany would like to present a typical German dessert and would order 20 strudels from Klaus and his Kaffeehaus for everyone to enjoy.  Each strudel would be cut into 20 to 25 pieces, as it is lunch time and there will be lots of other food there, too.

We are seeking at least 3 sponsors to help out – so far, we have the Westside German School, some waiving fees by Klaus and Westside German News sponsoring cake.  Let me know if you would like to be involved!

Regards, Elke

Waiting for Waldemar Movie

Join us for the screening of the Canadian-made docu-drama “Waiting for Waldemar” in Vancouver, BC on April 8th at 2:00pm at the Cinematheque on 1131 Howe St.

“Waiting for Waldemar” is the story of Erika, a one-year old who was born in a German colony in Ukraine. When Hitler declared war on Russia, millions of ethnic Germans were forced to escape. After a lull in the war, her father Waldemar disappeared in the town of Bendsburg, never to be seen again. 70 years later, Erika tries to put together the pieces of what became of her father, using 3rd hand stories and fragments of memories.

Having played to over 2000 people in over 10 cities around North America, “Waiting for Waldemar” is a testament that “love bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

The director, Eric Spoeth, will be in attendance for an audience Q&A after the screening.

Eric Spoeth is looking for business partners who may be interested in sponsoring the event, in the form of a full-screen ad that would play prior to the film. For $250, I could offer a 10-30 second commercial spot for companies on the big screen before the feature. If you don’t have a promotional video, we can produce a stills-based ad with a professional voiceover for an extra $250.

About Eric Spoeth:  Born of Silesian and Dnieper-German immigrants, Eric Spoeth studied Film and Media Production from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia. He frequently directs works that are an homage to film genres, such as Crane on a Rock (Hong Kong cinema), The Manikin (Silent Film), and Mea Maxima Culpa (1920s horror serials). He also works as an assistant director on productions in Western Canada.
