German Memberships for January 2020!

January 1, 2020 is your opportunity to get involved with the German Community in a variety of ways. Either by joining an Association that will help you achieve your personal or corporate goals or joining a club or a festival and help them keep going by becoming a steady, reliable volunteer. Volunteering is a great way of getting job experience, meeting other like-minded people, giving back to the community and is also a great way to meet people when you are new in town and looking for a way to connect.

“Wherever you turn, you can find someone who needs you. Even if it is a little thing, do something for which there is no pay but the privilege of doing it. Remember, you don’t live in the world all of your own.”
~Albert Schweitzer

Another thing that every club or association is looking for are sponsors. Sponsorship is a win-win situation. The non-profit or charity receives much needed resources and your business or corporation receives much-needed publicity. The European Festival is looking for a main $10,000 sponsor, for example, which is approximately the same fee as a couple of ads in a newspaper or magazine.

If you are business-minded or are looking for corporate opportunities, join the German Canadian Business Association. They hold monthly events and support German traditions and culture in a professional way. A basic member is $300 a year.

If you are looking for a community-minded association that involves all of Europe, then you might want to join the European Festival Planning Committee organized by the Eurofest BC Society Board. This event will be held Sunday, May 31, 2020 at the Vancouver Alpen Club and needs active members to help manage the entire festivals, which is run by volunteers. Basic membership is $60 a year.

This Non-profit Society at its Annual European Festival also has cultural tables, cultural performers with traditional dancing and/or singing and a marketplace selling traditional foods. Each individual European country can also use at at least 2 volunteers.

Finally, you if you are interested in a club that offers weekly events, interesting subgroups and delicious German food, maybe the Vancouver Alpen Club is for you. They just held their Annual Nikolaus event on Sunday, December 8th and around 60 children and their families, including Oma and Opa were in attendance. They ate food, sang songs, sat with Santa and found a variety of amazing treats in their shoe as they left. It is $125 in annual fees for couples to join.

If you are interested in learning more about all the above events or would like to join them, contact me and we can talk about it 604 828 8788. As the secretary of the German Canadian Business Association, and the Communications Director for the European Festival, as well as an occasional volunteer for the Alpen Club, I can help you get involved. And bring your children or your friends, too! Only by bringing in the next generation and widening the circle, can we keep things going.

Are there any clubs that you know of that could be listed here in Western Canada? They can start by joining the European Business Directory and then send me membership criteria of how a member of the public can join.

Enjoy Christmas and Advent and see you in the New Year!
