New German Classes on the North Shore

PW Secondary by Elke

Vancouver August 20, 2021 – Breaking news: On May 9, 2019 the German School North Shore celebrated its 45th anniversary. Today (August 18, 2021) I looked them up and discovered the school has now been closed permanently. The two main German Schools are the Vancouver Westside German School and the Surrey German Language School, in case you still want to enrol your student for this fall.

But wait, I have now learned that there is another program in the mix called “Vocal Chord”, who offer German classes for younger children in Lynn Valley. Run by Silke, who graduated from the CJD Schlaffhorst-Andersen School after 3 years of full time education as a certified State-Registered Teacher of Respiration, Speech and Voice in 2003. She now applies her expertise to teaching German language classes to children. And Vocal Chord has now decided to work in cooperation with the Vancouver Westside German School, offering German lessons to young children on the North Shore.

About Vancouver Westside German School

We offer a widely recognized high quality K-12 German after-school language program. Ideally students join our program at the age of 5 or 6 and progress on to high school. Students who would like to join our program at a later stage, must be able to speak/read/write in German at the same level as their peers. We teach German as a foreign language and German as a second language. To that end we stream our students throughout the entire program into a second language stream and a foreign language stream. Our program reflects a variety of language levels including German language introduction in Kindergarten, progression at the elementary level, exam classes for provincial high school credits, and the German language diploma, which is a language proficiency requirement for admission to any German, Austrian and Swiss university. Students learn German with us once a week after regular school hours. Junior classes (ages 5 to 10) are held on Tuesdays from 4:15 pm to 6:30 pm, and senior students (10 years and up) attend classes on Wednesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:45 pm, at Prince of Wales Secondary School. We receive financial support from the Federal Republic of Germany – the Zentrale für Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA). In addition our program is funded by tuition fees as well as donations made by parents and the community.

About Vocal Chord

We encourage learning through play. Studies show children gain a more holistic concept of learning through positive interactive experience. We ensure the children are social and having fun listening to stories, singing songs, playing games, role playing, and being creative, all in the language they’re learning. They will get a feel for the German language and create a foundation of vocabulary as well as extend their vocabulary depending on ability.
